Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is looking for you to join our team as a Mechanical Engineer or Principal Mechanical Engineer based out of Oxnard, CA.
You will also have an opportunity to deploy at sea for a cumulative time of 2 months or more per year to support equipment operations and maintenance. Compensation is commensurate with travel through appropriate allowances.
What You'll Get To Do: Join our dedicated Southern California field engineering team where you will get be a part of a team that designs, develops, tests, delivers, and operates advanced prototypes and unique marine systems. This role operates in a fast-paced environment and in a collaborative team setting across all levels of the organization.
You will have the opportunity to support a variety of unique mechanical equipment designed for marine applications. This involves a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines including mechanical design; structural analysis; thermal analysis; pressure vessels; material selection; hydraulic and pneumatic system design, component selection, troubleshooting and repair; and metallic and non-metallic fabrication techniques that will leverage your existing skills and challenge you to develop new skills.
In this role, you will apply basic knowledge of design and analysis tools and employ the application of general standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform tasks. You will also focus on managing the migration of model-based designs into new configuration management (CM) tools.
Typical Roles and Responsibilities include:
- Troubleshoot technical problems and issues, determine technical solutions in accordance with product and customer specifications.
- Migrate models and drawings into new configuration management (CM) tools (Solidworks Product Data Manager)
- Design for manufacturability and maintainability
- Innovate conceptual designs involving hydraulics, pneumatics, structures, and/or mechanisms per customer and mission requirements
- Select and analyze material for strength, weight efficiency, and corrosion considerations
- Support design through system installation, testing, operation, and training
- Write and edit documentation for production and maintenance procedures
- Analyze and derive requirements
This position may be filled as a Mechanical Engineer or Principal Mechanical Engineer.
Basic Qualifications for a Mechanical Engineer:
- Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 2 years relevant experience; Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 0 years.
- Experience with 3D modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Siemens NX 3D, CATIA or AutoCAD
- Experience with CAD CM tools such as PDM, Siemens Teamcenter, or Windchill PLM
- Able to communicate with various levels of leadership, must be able to coordinate and resolve technical problems and must work well collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently with limited guidance
- Ability to deploy with customer on a rotational basis (up to 25% travel)
- U.S. Citizenship and current/active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance required; must be able to obtain/maintain SCI and Program Special access prior to starting
Basic Qualifications for a Principal Mechanical Engineer:
- Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 5 years relevant experience; Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years.

Preferred Qualifications:
- SolidWorks 3D CAD software with simulation experience and PDM experience
- Marine environment engineering experience
- Proficient with textbook calculations and finite element analysis
- Experience with cranes and weight handling equipment
- Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic design, component selection, and troubleshooting
- Electronic packaging design experience
- Demonstrated independent planning, organization, and working in cross-functional teams with both internal and external customers.
- Active Top Secret Clearance with SCI eligibility
Primary Level Salary Range: $83,400.00 - $125,200.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $103,600.00 - $155,400.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
