As a Metrology Technologist – Quality Gate Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring product quality, accuracy, and compliance at key checkpoints within the manufacturing process.

    Mossville, IL - Tech Center

    , with a requirement to work on-site full-time at a Caterpillar facility.

What You’ll Do  

  • Perform

    in-process and final dimensional inspections

    at Quality Gates prior to release to downstream operations.

  • Validate all

    workflow requirements, documentation, and work orders

    are complete and compliant before part release.

  • Interpret

    engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T

    to ensure part conformance.

  • Utilize precision inspection equipment including:

    • Calipers, micrometers (OD/ID), bore gages, tri-mics
    • Height gages, tape measures, and surface finish equipment
  • Identify and document

    non-conforming conditions

    , initiate containment, and escalate issues as needed.

  • Maintain accurate

    inspection records, IPV sheets, and traceability documentation.
  • Partner with machinists, engineers, and leadership to

    communicate quality concerns and drive resolution.
  • Support

    root cause analysis

    by providing inspection data and measurement validation.

  • Ensure inspection tools and work areas remain

    clean, calibrated, and organized.

  • Proven

    problem-solving skills

    and ability to identify root causes of defects.

  • Effective communication

    shop floor and engineering teams.
  • Blueprint Interpretation

    – Advanced ability to work directly from prints, models, and specifications without standard work.

  • Mathematical Application

    – Proficiency in advanced shop math, geometry, and tolerances, and gauges.

  • Attention to Detail

    – High precision mindset with strict attention to detail and commitment to

    quality standards and accuracy.
  • Collaboration

    – Ability to consult with engineers and mentor other machinists or operators.

Top Candidates Will Also Have

  • An accredited degree from a two-year or four-year educational program.

  • Strong background in

    blueprint reading

    ,

    precision measurement

    , and

    tolerance control

    .

  • Experience in

    quality inspection or precision measurement environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of

    Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)

    and blueprint interpretation.

  • Experience using

    handheld precision measurement tools

    and inspection equipment.

*Supplemental roles: receive some benefits, including: 

  • 40 hours of paid personal time per year, prorated based on start date.

Summary Pay Range:

$35.81 - $38.49

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market

location, job-related

knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
