Summary of Responsibilities: The Manufacturing Engineer III - Mechanical at Vander-Bend Manufacturing is responsible for implementing customer-provided and Vander-Bend proprietary designs, including piece parts and sub-assemblies. This role develops, sustains, and improves manufacturing methods, tooling, and tests to ensure manufacturing capability and efficiency.

Difference from Lower-Level Position

This position requires significantly more customer interaction, an advanced understanding of manufacturing processes and tolerances, and the ability to lead strategic manufacturing and process improvements. Familiarity with production ramps and product/technology transfers is required.

 Responsibilities

  • Provide customers with technical support during NPI and production lifecycles
  • Provide suppliers with technical support in the sourcing or development of parts/assemblies
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs
  • Develop manufacturing processes by studying product requirements, researching testing methods, and conferring with equipment vendors
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout
  • Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods
  • Provide manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs
  • Prepare product and process reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  • Provide manufacturing engineering information by answering questions and requests
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with government regulations
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services
  • Complete design and development projects by training and guiding technicians
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops
  • Serve as a technical focal point who meets the Customer Focus Business Unit (CFBU) objectives of delivery, quality, and customer service

Financial Responsibilities

Approves expenditures in accordance with the Company's "Purchase Requisition Approval Levels" form 7.4.2, F-03. This position requires management approval for activities that involve financial obligations of the Company.

 Interactions

Interacts closely with all levels of staff in all functional groups.

 Decision Making

Works on problems of significant scope, using a high level of initiative to direct staff toward problem resolution. Most significant activities are subject to management review and approval.

Requirements

  • Lead continuous improvement activities with complete documentation, including a follow-up review with the team in a presentation format
  • Knowledge of metal fabrication techniques (sheet metal, welding, brazing, investment casting, machining, and metal spinning)
  • Manufacturing Engineering experience supporting mid-volume production (ECNs, BOMs, work instructions, equipment/tooling/fixture/test development, troubleshooting)
  • Knowledge of Outside Processes (anodize, chem film, paint, etc.) and ability to work with suppliers to achieve part requirements
  • Demonstrate discretion, confidentiality, independent judgment, and professionalism when representing the company
  • Ability to use Minitab or other statistical software to analyze data and draw conclusions
  • Ability to effectively train manufacturing personnel on assembly and test methods
  • Experience using root cause analysis tools such as 5 Why, Fishbone, 8D, etc.
  • Ability to support responsible programs when necessary, including weekends
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as presentation skills
  • Understanding of Lean principles and continuous improvement methods
  • Understanding of and ability to use continuous improvement tools
  • Experience working with one or more advanced 3D CAD systems
  • Knowledge of plant layout design for efficient workflow
  • Proven ability to complete projects in a timely manner
  • Safety, testing, and tool/fixture design experience
  • Experience working with MRP/ERP systems

Education and Experience

  • 4-year Engineering or Technical degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience as approved by senior management
  • 8+ years of manufacturing experience
  • 1+ years in a leadership role
  • Ability to lead strategic manufacturing and process improvement initiatives
  • Familiarity with production ramps and product/technology transfers
