Job Description

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Avionics & Wiring Technician to join our Experimental Operations team. In this role, you will be on the leading edge of autonomy retrofits of existing aircraft. You will be responsible for building, routing, and testing complex wire harnesses, as well as installing the advanced sensors, redundant communication systems, and flight control actuators that make autonomous flight possible. You will work closely with our aerospace engineers to take prototype designs from the lab into the aircraft, while informing processes to scale manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, modify, and install custom wire harnesses for experimental flight controls, avionics, flight computers, detect-and-avoid (DAA) sensors, radar, and communication suites
  • Install prototype avionics, fly-by-wire electromechanical actuators, and computing enclosures into the airframe in accordance with engineering schematics and applicable regulations and maintenance programs
  • Conduct functional, operational, and ground-loop tests on new installations. Use standard diagnostic tools (multimeters, etc.) to troubleshoot circuitry and redundant systems
  • Work directly with hardware and electrical engineers to provide feedback on prototype installations, red-line electrical drawings, and suggest improvements for design-for-manufacturability
  • Meticulously log maintenance actions, maintain configuration control of the experimental aircraft, and ensure all wiring changes are documented per FAA regulations and internal company protocols
  • Assist the flight operations team with daily inspections, pre-flight ground testing of the autonomous system, and post-flight data retrieval and troubleshooting

Required

  • 3+ years of aerospace industry experience working in avionics, electrical wiring, or a closely related technical field
  • Demonstrated proficiency in building, repairing, and pinning aerospace-grade wire harnesses (e.g., stripping, crimping, soldering, and using mil-spec connectors).
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and red-line complex wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical blueprints
  • Hands-on experience using diagnostic equipment (voltmeters, circuit testers, avionics test sets)
  • High attention to detail and a strict commitment to aviation safety standards.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced R&D environment where instructions may adapt and evolve

This position must meet US export control compliance requirements, therefore a candidate must qualify as a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15. “US Person” includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees

Desired

  • Direct experience performing maintenance or avionics modifications on the Cessna 208/208B Grand Caravan
  • Current FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) certification
  • Previous experience working with experimental aircraft, first-of-type prototype installations, or Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) modifications
  • Familiarity with autonomous vehicle technology, fly-by-wire systems, or unmanned aerial systems (UAS)
