The Opportunity
Hitachi Energy is seeking a Power Electronics Hardware Research and Development Engineer to lead the development of next-generation power electronic hardware for grid modernization, electrification, renewable energy, and advanced transformer applications. In this role, you will drive innovation in power electronics, converter hardware, PCBA design, EMI/EMC design and compliance, and system integration technologies.
How You Will Make an Impact
· Lead R&D activities focused on power electronics hardware for power converter systems
· Design PCB layouts and create engineering packages for PCBAs, including gate-drive and sensing circuits, protection, control boards, and auxiliary power supplies.
· Perform schematic capture, component selection, stack-up definition, layout reviews, and design verification of complex multilayer PCB assemblies.
· Develop hardware solutions utilizing wide bandgap power semiconductors.
· Lead EMI/EMC design activities including emissions mitigation, grounding, shielding, isolation, and filter development.
· Conduct simulation, laboratory testing, prototype validation, and failure analysis.
· Collaborate with controls, software, transformer, insulation, mechanical, and manufacturing teams.
· Drive innovation through patents, publications, and technology transfer.
Your Background
· M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or related field.
· At least 5 years of experience in power electronics hardware design and validation.
· Demonstrated experience designing converters or grid-connected power conversion equipment.
· Proven experience in PCBA design and development including schematic capture, layout review, DFM, and DFT.
· Expertise in EMI/EMC design, troubleshooting, compliance testing, and mitigation techniques.
· Knowledge of high-voltage isolation, creepage and clearance requirements, and safety-critical hardware design.
· Experience with different types of semiconductor devices.
· Experience with laboratory instrumentation and EMC test equipment.
· Excellent communication and technical leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with Altium Designer (or similar) for PCB design.
· Experience with Ansys FEA toolset to model and simulate the EMI/EMC performance of power electronic based systems.
· Knowledge of reliability analysis methods including FMEA and root-cause failure analysis.
· Experience integrating DSP, FPGA, and embedded control platforms into power electronic products.
