We are seeking an experienced Senior Principal Systems Engineer to lead the definition, design, and development of a next-generation architecture for the STARS (Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System) platform. The ideal candidate will bring deep systems engineering expertise, demonstrated leadership in large-scale system architecture modernization, and advanced proficiency with Cameo Systems Modeler and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies.

This role will serve as the technical architect responsible for shaping the system’s long-term architectural vision, ensuring alignment with program goals, safety requirements, and future scalability needs. The candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams, program leadership, and external stakeholders to drive a cohesive, sustainable architectural baseline.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead the architecture development effort for the next-generation STARS system, including conceptual architecture, logical and physical architectures, and interface definitions.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality MBSE models using Cameo to represent system behavior, structure, interfaces, constraints, and verification pathways.
  • Perform architecture trade studies and define technical roadmaps to guide modernization efforts.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering, software engineering, hardware engineering, integration/test, and program management to ensure architectural alignment and feasibility.
  • Establish and enforce architectural and modeling standards, patterns, and best practices.
  • Support requirements decomposition and allocation using MBSE techniques to ensure traceability and consistency across system artifacts.
  • Present architectural concepts, analyses, and decision rationales to internal and external stakeholders, including leadership and customers.
  • Mentor junior engineers in MBSE methodologies, Cameo usage, and system architecture principles.
  • Ensure all architectural work complies with safety, regulatory, and certification requirements relevant to NAS systems.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
  • 10+ years of experience in complex system architecture, systems engineering, or equivalent roles.
  • Proven experience developing architectures for safety-critical, mission-critical, or large-scale distributed systems.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Cameo Systems Modeler, SysML, and MBSE processes.
  • Strong knowledge of system requirements, interface design, integration, and verification strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead architectural efforts from concept through implementation.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and technical leadership skills.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience with FAA systems, ATC/ATM domain, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with STARS or related NAS infrastructure.
  • Experience with digital engineering pipelines, model governance, or toolchain integration.
  • Knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks (DoDAF, UAF).

The salary range for this role is 132,400 USD - 251,600 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
