Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer – Battery & Power Design to join the Consumer Product Engineering organization. This role will contribute to the architecture, detailed design, integration, and productization of battery-powered consumer electronics from early concept through mass production.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on electrical engineer with strong expertise in battery systems, battery protection, charging, power conversion, power management, and low-power electronics. The engineer will work closely with the Battery & Power Electronics teams, Systems Engineering, Software, Mechanical Engineering, EMC, Reliability, Safety/Compliance, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to deliver robust and efficient battery-system designs.

The role requires strong electrical engineering fundamentals, practical design experience at the component and PCB level, and the ability to independently resolve complex technical problems across the battery and power subsystem.

Key Responsibilities

Battery & Power System Design

  • Support battery-cell and battery-pack selection based on electrical, runtime, charging, thermal, safety, reliability, and product requirements.
  • Design and develop battery and power-management circuitry for portable consumer electronic products.
  • Develop and review schematics for battery packs, chargers, Qi chargers, power-path management, DC/DC converters, regulators, protection circuits, fuel gauges, and related power electronics.
  • Perform component selection, circuit analysis, simulation, design calculations, and design trade-off studies.
  • Evaluate and optimize power architecture for efficiency, runtime, standby current, thermal performance, charging performance, and system robustness.
  • Provide technical guidance for PCB layout of switching power supplies, charging circuits, high-current paths, sensitive analog signals, grounding, and power integrity.

Design Integration and Product Development

  • Translate product and system requirements into battery and power subsystem designs.
  • Integrate battery, charging, power-management, protection, and sensing functions with the overall product electrical architecture.
  • Work closely with embedded software engineers on charger control, fuel gauging, battery-management interfaces, power states, fault handling, and system behavior.
  • Support electrical interfaces using protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, USB, and other embedded interfaces as required.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering on battery-pack integration, connector selection, thermal considerations, mechanical constraints, and custom battery-pack development.
  • Collaborate with EMC, Safety, Reliability, and Compliance engineers to ensure designs meet product and regulatory requirements.

Bring-Up, Debug, and Engineering Analysis

  • Perform board bring-up, characterization, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis of battery and power-related issues.
  • Characterize charging behavior, power conversion efficiency, current consumption, startup and shutdown behavior, transient response, battery runtime, and system power states.
  • Evaluate formal verification and validation results and drive technical resolution of design issues.
  • Investigate complex hardware, firmware, battery, supplier, and system-level interactions.
  • Use laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, electronic loads, precision power analyzers, power supplies, multimeters, current probes, and related instrumentation.
  • Develop scripts, tools, or automated methods where appropriate to improve design characterization and engineering analysis.

Supplier and Manufacturing Collaboration

  • Work directly with battery-cell, battery-pack, charger IC, fuel-gauge, power-management IC, and other technology suppliers.
  • Support technical evaluation and qualification of new components and technologies.
  • Collaborate with suppliers on custom battery-pack and power-system design solutions.
  • Review supplier data, characterization results, design recommendations, and technical roadmaps.
  • Support contract manufacturers and development partners through prototype builds, design validation, production introduction, and post-production issue resolution.

Technology Development and Engineering Excellence

  • Evaluate emerging battery, charging, power-management, and power-conversion technologies for future products.
  • Contribute to development and improvement of reusable battery and power design practices, design guidelines, reference designs, and engineering methods.
  • Capture technical learning and design best practices for reuse across programs.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical guidance to other electrical engineers working on battery-powered products.
  • Contribute to Battery & Power Systems knowledge sharing and capability development across the broader Electrical Engineering organization.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Typically 8+ years of relevant electrical product design experience, including significant hands-on experience with battery-powered or low-power electronic systems.
  • Demonstrated experience developing complex electrical subsystems from concept through product launch.
  • Strong experience with component-level and PCB-level electrical design, analysis, bring-up, and debugging.
  • Ability to work independently on complex technical problems with limited supervision.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of battery-powered system architecture and power-management design.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Lithium-ion or lithium-polymer battery systems.
    • Battery charging and power-path architectures.
    • Fuel-gauge and battery-monitoring devices.
    • Battery protection and safety circuits.
    • Buck, boost, buck-boost, LDO, and other power-conversion topologies.
    • Low-power and standby-current optimization.
    • Power sequencing and system power-state management.
  • Strong analog and mixed-signal electrical engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience with schematic capture, circuit simulation, and PCB design-review tools.
  • Understanding of PCB layout considerations for switching regulators, high-current paths, grounding, power integrity, thermal performance, and EMC.
  • Experience with embedded microcontrollers and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Familiarity with I2C, SPI, UART, USB, and similar digital interfaces.
  • Strong laboratory characterization and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience performing systematic root-cause analysis of hardware and system-level problems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Consumer electronics product-development experience.
  • Experience designing battery-powered audio, wearable, portable, or other high-volume consumer products.
  • Experience with custom battery-pack development and battery-pack suppliers.
  • Familiarity with battery-management systems (BMS) and algorithms, including State of Charge, State of Health, fuel gauging, and protection strategies.
  • Experience with USB-C and USB Power Delivery charging architectures.
  • Experience with wireless charging technologies such as Qi.
  • Familiarity with battery safety, transportation, and product regulatory requirements.
  • Experience designing products for EMC, electrical safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers, ODMs, and global component suppliers.
  • Experience using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for engineering analysis, characterization, or test automation.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing test methodologies and production support.

Role Expectations

This individual is expected to independently own technically complex battery and power design activities, influence product-level technical decisions, identify and resolve cross-functional design issues, and provide technical guidance to other engineers.
