ADEF & Comms System Applications Engineer
ADEF & Comms System Applications Engineering is seeking a System Applications Engineer to join our team at ADI's Durham, NC campus or Chelmsford, MA. This role will contribute to the development, validation, and customer support of system-level platforms spanning software-defined radios (SDRs), phased arrays, and high-speed data converter and RF transceiver solutions. The engineer will work across hardware, software, FPGA, RF/microwave, and mixed-signal domains, collaborating with teams across North America, Europe, and Asia to turn ADI technology into validated subsystem solutions and practical customer demonstrations.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Support customers and internal field teams with platform bring-up, system configuration, troubleshooting, and design guidance.
- Develop application notes, technical presentations, and other collateral that demonstrate ADI system solutions.
- Collaborate with product, applications, software, FPGA, marketing, and business teams to identify platform requirements and improve solution readiness.
- Design and execute laboratory test plans to characterize platform performance and verify customer use cases and system variants.
- Debug issues across hardware, firmware, FPGA, drivers, software, power, clocking, and digital interfaces, with support from domain experts as needed.
- Document test methods, results, limitations, and recommended operating configurations in a clear and repeatable manner.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Practical experience integrating or testing RF, mixed-signal, embedded, FPGA, or software-defined radio systems.
- Ability to use laboratory equipment and structured debugging methods to isolate system-level problems.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical results to engineering and customer audiences.
- US Citizenship or Permanent Residency
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of radar and communications signal chains, including frequency planning, gain, noise, linearity, dynamic range, and data throughput.
- Experience with SDR platforms and RF transceivers, including device configuration, waveform generation or capture, and analysis of sampled data.
- Experience with phased-array systems, including multichannel synchronization, beam steering or calibration, and RF channel-to-channel performance.
- Experience with high-speed ADC- and DAC-based platforms, including clocking, JESD204 interfaces, FPGA data paths, and converter performance evaluation.
- Familiarity with FPGA or embedded development and interfaces such as SPI, I2C, Ethernet, PCIe, and serial data links.
- Proficiency with MATLAB and/or Python for instrument control, data processing, visualization, and test automation; familiarity with Git-based workflows.
- Familiarity with RF and system simulation tools such as Keysight ADS, Keysight SystemVue, Ansys HFSS, or Cadence SI/PI.
- Hands-on experience with RF/microwave and high-speed laboratory equipment, including vector network analyzers, spectrum or signal analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and collaborate effectively across geographically distributed and cross-functional teams.
- Ability to interface professionally with external customers and translate application needs into actionable platform requirements and test plans.
