Pascal

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

Posted on:

We are taking on the climate crisis while ensuring that people have the tools they need to deal with our warming world. Heating, cooling, and refrigeration technologies are critical to modern life but use nearly 40% of all energy generated today, release potent greenhouse gas refrigerants to the atmosphere, and are too expensive to be adopted worldwide. This has to change, and fast, so Pascal’s working to better refrigeration (and air conditioning and heat pumps) through materials science.

We’re a group of materials scientists and engineers, based in Cambridge, MA, looking to upend the 150 year old HVACR industry and lead a transition to solid refrigerants. These new materials can unlock a massive efficiency boost over conventional systems, saving our customers money while reducing electrical load and eliminating refrigerant emissions. But getting there requires us to fundamentally redesign the air conditioner and we need your help.

Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be an experienced individual contributor responsible for building Pascal’s prototype system as well as any necessary test rigs under the direction of the CTO/VP Eng. They will spec, design, procure, and build these systems as well as provide modeling support for these systems.

Pascal is building a world-class engineering team, capable of ideating and prototyping systems at a rapid pace (2-3 weeks per design cycle) in order to drive its technical progress forward. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be a key driver of this capability; organizing and executing on the deadlines, building internal capabilities to design and build a wide variety of systems and creatively exploring potential designs in an efficient manner.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as the key architect, central contributor, and owner of deliverables for Pascal’s initial prototype.
  • Make significant improvements to Pascal's original design to make it easier to manufacture and maintain.
  • Design, procure, and build critical test rigs to spec and on time.
  • Streamline the engineering workflow and decrease the development cycle.
  • Contribute to multiple projects at once and provide good mentorship to junior engineers as the team grows.
  • Be the go-to problem solver at the company and provide creative engineering solutions to help push other company priorities forward.

Job Requirements

Skills and knowledge:

  • Significant experience (5+ years) building complex thermo fluidic machines. Examples include combustion engines, turbines, compressors, hydraulics, pumps, thermal and momentum storage devices, HVAC systems etc. Diverse experiences with multiple different system types are extremely valued.
  • Strong prototyping skillset, including use of machine tools and computer assisted design, conceptualizing and executing on a mechanical design, combined experimental/theoretical optimization efforts of thermo/mechanical systems, and an ability to engineer custom/creative solutions to non-traditional problems.
  • Sufficient understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer to have appropriate intuition in designing Pascal’s systems.
  • Familiarity with high-pressure systems (5,000 psi and above),
  • Familiarity with heat exchanger design.
  • Strong documentation skills.

Essential traits:

  • Strong bias to action
  • Creative thinker
  • Operates with a growth mindset
  • Clear communicator
  • Collaborative worker
