The Mechanical Engineer for Underwater Robotics will join a green-tech startup focused on developing autonomous robots for inspecting and maintaining ship hulls. The role involves designing and testing robot components that can operate in harsh marine environments while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities
- Design waterproof robot bodies, brushing systems, drive trains, and docking systems for marine conditions.
- Test designs using simulations and real-world prototypes in lab and field environments.
- Rapidly iterate on mechanical prototypes to enhance performance and manufacturability.
- Collaborate with vendors and fabrication partners for sourcing and refining components.
- Conduct design reviews and ensure integration of mechanical systems with cross-functional teams.
- Contribute to system-level problem solving, including failure analysis and field issue resolution.
Job Requirements
- 2+ years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in robotics or marine systems.
- Expert CAD skills (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) with an understanding of design for manufacturability.
- Significant hands-on fabrication experience, including CNC and 3D printing.
- Experience with electromechanical systems, including motor selection and drivetrain design.
- Comfort designing for harsh environments, including waterproofing and corrosion resistance.
- Strong analytical skills supported by calculations, FEA, and testing.
- Desired skills include experience with underwater robotics and knowledge of fluid dynamics.
