Automation & Controls Engineer (Optical Products)

The role is for an Automation & Controls Engineer in the Starlink space lasers team at SpaceX, focusing on developing automated manufacturing and testing solutions for satellite communication systems.

• Design, develop, and commission automated processes and production cells in high-volume manufacturing environments.
• Own development of factory automation software controlling process flow and monitoring factory health.
• Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to ensure products are designed for automated production and reliability.
• Implement ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant systems for manufacturing equipment.
• Design sensor systems for monitoring processes and ensuring operator safety.
• Interface with vendor hardware software for factory workflow integration.
• Design user interfaces for complex machines to enhance control and troubleshooting.

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, computer science, or related STEM field.
• 1+ years of experience in automation, robotic cells, or controls systems.
• Programming experience in C/C++/Python/Ladder Logic or Structured Text.
• Preferred experience with SECS/GEM protocols and micro-electronics assembly machinery.
• Knowledge of PLC programming and robotics/motion control.
• Familiarity with various production machinery and industrial sensors.
• Excellent communication skills and a strong desire to learn and innovate.
